Whenever a patient with blood cancer or a blood disorder needs a lifesaving stem cell transplant, they search the register, looking for someone who’s a genetic match for that patient. Once you’re signed up, they will send you a swab pack in the post so that you can do a cheek swab and send it back to them, it’s as simple as that! If then, you’re a match, they’ll get in touch, and ask you if you are still happy to donate and then there you have it, you’re on the road to giving a special someone a chance at life!
9 out of 10 people donate their stem cells through the bloodstream in a straightforward process called peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collection. (like a normal blood test)
1 in 10 donors will have their stem cells collected via the bone marrow itself, while under general anaesthetic.
If you’re on the register, you need to be happy to donate your stem cells via either method. But coming from an honest place from me to you, both methods are just the tip of the ice berg for cancer patients and from personal experience and numerous bone marrow collections straight from the bone marrow…it really is not that bad! Honest! I’ve stubbed a toe which has been more painful!
However, you are definitely more than likely to donate stem cells by extracting blood like a normal blood test. Just gotta' cover all bases, you know?
